PRESS RELEASE. From the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office website and Facebook on December 9th, 2024.
San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office reaches significant milestone in hiring of sworn personnel.
San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus announced Monday that the Sheriff’s Office has reached its lowest number of sworn vacancies in recent years.
Following a swearing-in ceremony held December 2, the Sheriff’s Office is nearly fully staffed with correctional officers with just one vacancy. Additionally, there are now 36 vacancies for deputy sheriff positions. By comparison, in early 2024, the Sheriff’s Office hit a peak of about 100 sworn vacancies.
Sheriff Corpus attributes this milestone to the office’s innovative recruitment and retention strategies, including hiring bonuses and extensive health, fitness, nutrition and wellness programming for Sheriff’s Office employees.
“After inheriting a significant staffing crisis, I’m very proud of the progress we’ve made to greatly improve our sworn staffing levels,” said Sheriff Corpus. “Our staffing levels directly correlate to the level of service our San Mateo County residents expect and deserve to receive from their Sheriff’s Office.”
As the Sheriff’s Office looks ahead to 2025, and in anticipation of planned retirements, Sheriff Corpus plans to continue to expand recruitment and retention initiatives, along with succession planning.
