The rose greenhouse and the source of the orange lights. Valentines and Mother’s Day are the two biggest rose seasons. This time of year is slow for roses.
How a rose is born. Rocket Farms, Carolyn Killingsworth, leads the tour. Cuttings are put into 4 inch pots in proprietary soil made of Danish peat. For two weeks they are coddled in warm mist, high in carbon dioxide. Water is heated in big boilers, the water heats the rooms and increases carbon dioxide, which baby roses love.
Out of the mist room, the roses are packed tightly together for efficient watering. All water is recycled. Some roses are trimmed once, other varieties are trimmed twice.
Off-season for roses. During the season it is all roses.
The next room spaces the roses farther apart to grow bigger. Watering is automated.
The Bloom Room. Rocket Farms has a skeleton crew on weekends. Automation of the growing trays makes watering easier and easier on the back.
