REDWOOD CITY — The County of San Mateo’s Human Services Agency, in partnership with local community organizations, is seeking volunteers for the 2026 One Day Homeless Count taking place Thursday, January 29, 2026.

The One Day Count, required by federal law, provides vital data to help San Mateo County and its partners understand homelessness in the community and guide decisions about funding, programs, and long-term solutions that support people experiencing homelessness.

“Community volunteers are essential to the success of this effort,” said Claire Cunningham, Director of the Human Services Agency. “Each volunteer helps ensure we have an accurate picture of homelessness in our county so we can better direct resources where they’re needed most.”

Event Details

  • Date: Thursday, January 29, 2026
  • Time: Approximately 5:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
  • Activity: Observational count of unsheltered individuals using a mobile app
  • Perks: Breakfast and coffee provided for volunteers

Volunteers will be assigned to a designated area (census tract) and will walk or drive through their section to record observations using their personal smartphone. Free virtual training will be provided and is required to participate.

Community members of all backgrounds are encouraged to join, especially those familiar with local neighborhoods or passionate about supporting efforts to end homelessness. Accommodations are available for volunteers with limited mobility, transportation, or technology access.

Hello One Day Homeless Count Volunteer!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 2026 One Day Homeless Count (“Count”). You will be playing a critical role in the observational count, and the data you will help to collect will play an important part in local planning, program development, and grant funding.

Prior to volunteering, you are expected to participate in a training session to learn more about the One Day Homeless Count and your role. The One Day Count Organizers will reach out to volunteers with more information on how to fulfill this requirement at a later date, using the email address HSA_OneDayCount@smcgov.org. Please make sure your email will not filter out messages from this email address to ensure you receive these updates. 

The One Day Homeless Count will take place on Thursday, January 29th, 2026, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. On the morning of the Count, you will be paired with another volunteer and assigned a region of the County to conduct an observational count of the unsheltered population.

Volunteer Requirements:

  1. At least 18 years old
  2. Attend a training (virtual)
  3. Have access to a smart phone and/or able to drive your own car

When you submit this form, it will not automatically collect your details like name and email address unless you provide it yourself.
