PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay on February 28th, 2025.
The City of Half Moon Bay is launching a new pilot program, making four new fire pits available for public use at Poplar Beach from Friday, February 28 to Friday, March 14, 2025!
This initiative is designed to offer more community connection for Half Moon Bay youth and families, providing a fun, safe, and wholesome space for recreation. Additionally, we are extending the beach hours to 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays during the pilot to give you more time to enjoy a fireside experience.
Normal beach hours will resume after the pilot concludes. We’re also working to ensure Coastal Act consistency, with access for locals and tourists of all economic backgrounds.
We can’t wait for you to enjoy a cozy evening at Poplar Beach! The gates at Poplar Beach Parking Lot will be open Friday and Saturday nights 10:00 pm for this two-week pilot program. Parking fees are still applicable.

We noticed very little trash this morning. As always, open fires are not allowed on HMB beaches.
Yes, you can grill on the grates (and somebody already made steak). Glass containers and alcohol are not permitted on city beaches (not my rule).
The firepits will be stored by the city. Chloe is applying for a CDP (Coastal Development Permit) with the California Coastal Commission for her High School capstone project. Goal is have them back in May!

Half Moon Bay City Council ~ Meetings ~ 1st & 3rd Tuesdays @ 7:00pm
The City Council of Half Moon Bay is the City’s governing body, and consists of five elected members. The Council sets priorities and policies, makes final decisions on all major City matters, adopts ordinances and resolutions, appoints the City Manager and City Attorney, and approves the annual budget.
The Half Moon Bay City Council typically meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month starting at 7:00pm at the Ted Adcock Community Center, 535 Kelly Avenue.

The City of Half Moon Bay holds district-based elections for its five city council seats. Each Councilmember is elected to a 4 year term. There are no term limits in Half Moon Bay. The City Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor and one to serve as Vice Mayor, on an annual basis.
- November 2024 Election – Districts 2 and 3 will elect a representative to a four-year term.
- November 2026 Election – Districts 1, 4, and 5 will elect a representative to a four-year term.
