Rosie’s Language History ~ How could English be her first language…and her fourth?!

Rosie’s first language was English from birth to 5 years of age learned in the U.S.. At 5 her mother took her to Peru where she learned to speak, read, and write in Spanish. She went to Peruvian schools during her primary years. Then, she went to an Italian speaking high school where she learned to speak, write, read and pray in Italian. So, English was her first language and became her fourth as well, when she returned to the U.S.!

Rosie works for the South San Francisco Unified School District. She used to work in classrooms, in the (ELD) English Language Development classes, including the Newcomers. She also worked in classes with children with special needs (moderate) which included students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. And she can speak a little conversational Tagalog (Phillipino) as well, which was very useful.  She is presently working in the Measure J Prop 39 Bond Department, construction upgrade of the school buildings and playgrounds.

How to Use Bedtime Stories as an Independent Reading Tutor

Prepare your child for a relaxing audio podcast experience. Whether in the car, the store, or before bed, let your child immerse their ear in their imagination. School is largely auditory. So, prepare your kid to listen and visualize a story without TV or video. Just listen!

Then share the book to the audio. Listen and read. Allow your child to teach themselves to read. Using visual/audio anchor words your child will figure out the visual/sound connections by themselves. Eventually, they will be able to read the book to you all by themselves!
