PRESS RELEASE. From Rita Mancera, Executive Director of Puente de la Costa Sur on January, 5th, 2025.
Dear community of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar and San Gregorio,
This morning our team received multiple communications regarding the presence of ICE in the community. An initial incorrect notification was texted through Puente’s SMS notification system, Talking Points, to the community stating that ICE was in Pescadero; however, the correct information went out through our texting tool within 30 minutes, stating that ICE was not present.
Puente has a rigorous communications plan for situations like this, and yet we learned that we must make improvements to our system to ensure that only accurate information is being disseminated in a timely manner. These are very difficult times given the immigration rhetoric we are experiencing from the federal government. I would like to reiterate that, ICE was not in Pescadero this morning.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office issued a communication with the following statement:
Community Alert: February 5, 2025, at 7:50 a.m.: Earlier this morning, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office served a search warrant at an agricultural property in Pescadero regarding a wage theft investigation. At the request of the District Attorney’s Office, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Coastside Patrol Bureau was on scene to ensure the safety of all involved.
We understand a large law enforcement presence may cause concerns, and we want to provide reassurance to the community. *No immigration enforcement agency was involved in any way, nor was anyone stopped, detained, or questioned about their immigration status. *
The District Attorney’s Office investigation was regarding whether agricultural employees were paid their fair, legal wages. If the District Attorney’s Office shares additional public information regarding this case, we will be sure to update this post”.
I want to thank our partners Faith in Action Bay Area for their work covering the Community Response Hotline (203) 666-4472, the community members for reaching out and our team for showing up to the site to gather more information from law enforcement agencies involved so that we were able send accurate information to our community members.
If you would like to receive messages from Puente, please enroll in Talking Points by sending your number to 650-730-4835.
Thank you for your trust and support,
Rita Mancera, Executive Director of Puente
