On Tuesday afternoon September 6th, 2016, I get a call from Kenny Howell, of Epic Surfski fame. He was calling me from the harbor mouth, whilst on his Epic Surfski to make a “reservation” for Casey and Ryan at the “Coastside Beach Club campground” – the vacant lot where the Coastal Butterfly stores her paddlecraft.
Ryan and Casey left Ketchican, Alaska, on March 15th, 2016, and were heading 2,200 miles to Mexico, when they ran into Kenny. They aimed to arrive in Mexico in July, but it was September in Half Moon Bay, with a long way still to go. They were thrilled with a hot shower, carpet under their tent and lots and lots of Farm to Table food from the Old Princeton Landing where they ran into Jeff and Cassandra Clark for tales of the sea. Cassandra said she had never seen two humans each so much food. Casey and Ryan have a few other funny feeding stories. It is a major effort to keep themselves fed with enough calories. Once they hit Half Moon Bay, they were starting to pedal back on the dehydrated food, and hitting local eateries.
They paddle with packs loaded fore and aft.
They have done this trip, with NO support crew at all. None.
As they got closer to their So-Cal home, their friends have been able to trek up to meet them here and there. They were expecting to be to Mexico by July, but they were in Half Moon Bay in September, only half way there. But they were in great spirits, their enthusiasm undaunted, seemingly not in the least bit worn.
You can see below how they have to load their bags and board onto the water.
Joe Bark paddleboards is sponsoring their trip. Their boards are 18′ long.
