Here is the Coastside Buzz Report for Friday, August 8th, 2024
The Governor’s budget cuts cancel funding for the Hwy 1 and Hwy 92 Middle Mile Broadband again. Senator Becker and Assemblyman Berman are working to get the funding back again.
After the City of Half Moon Bay rejected the 555 Kelly farmworker housing project referendum petition which had 1179 signatures collected in three weeks. The “Let HMB Voters Decide” group asked the City to Agendize the 555 Kelly Referendum Petition for the August 7th special meeting.
And so they did. Then at the meeting the Half Moon Bay attorney confirmed that the 555 Kelly petition was not legally referendable. The attorney determined that the petition was illegal as it addressed an administrative action, not a legislative one. Then Council member Ruddock Motioned to have a special meeting before the ballot deadline but there was no second motion and so the motion died. Council member Rarback then Offered that a Lawsuit or council recall are possible. Hang on to your hats! Keep in mind there are lease negotiations going on at the same time.
On another housing issue the San Mateo County Supervisors voted to delay the Article 34 Public Rental Housing Ballot measure until the next election cycle. A poll was run and it was generally positive in the 50s with a 5% margin of error. Supervisor Noelio Corzo said that HEART or the San Mateo County Housing Endowment and Regional Trust wrote a letter to State to repeal Article 34. My post includes an essay by CALCOG or the California Association of Councils of Governments titled “Its Past Time to Repeal Article 34”. There was a state ballot measure called SCA 2 that was aimed for November for 2024 but it was pulled to avoid a costly campaign.
Last housing post….The Half Moon Bay City Council approved HCD’s RHNA Cycle 6 Housing Element leaving Our Lady of the Pillar Church on the Opportunity List with acknowledgement that they want a Catholic school there.
Half Moon Bay approved the 2024-2025 Sewer assessment rate increase of 13%. Single family home rate will be $1,344 per year. The staff report is embedded in the post but the long and short of it is that labor and construction are way more expensive than ever, and infrastructure is ruled by entropy… but read the staff report.
Half Moon Bay staff was granted access to Assemblymember Berman’s $1.25M construction grant for Coastside Water District and Sewer Fees for the 880 Stone Pine Cove Farmworker Housing. Wander down to the end of Stone pine to see how it is going. The post has a map of the layout and pictures of what it will look like.
The San Mateo County Harbor District heard a proposal for a Migrating Mural Oceans project at Pillar Point Harbor. The mural is slated to be done by InkDwell. Sea Hugger is also involved. The presentation had some sample graphics so check them out. Murals are a great way to educate and make things look pretty. I know Johnston Pier and the Retail Center are due for remodels so where they will paint is still up in the air.
Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside’s Princeton Pump Station construction is now complete!! SAM is now meeting ERF’s Consent Decree lawsuit. The Ecological Rights Foundation is an environmental lawsuit regarding sewage spills. As importantly the project is keeping workers safe. For your nature fix I posted an article and video from Midpen Open Space and Big Basin about the miracle of the secretive Marbled Murrelet and its first recorded flight in Big Basin State Park. This is a bird with webbed feet that is born in the forest but ultimately lives on the Sea. The video is pretty exciting to watch.
