For the last 15 years the Coastside Fishing Club has assembled a Salmon smolt net pen (smolt means baby salmon). There are 3 nets ~ one for the smolt (to keep them in), one for the seals and one for the birds (to keep them out).
The smolt are delivered from the Mokelumne River Hatchery. They will make 3 deliveries over the next 2 weeks. A total of 750,000 smolt will be delivered. An oxygen bubbler keeps the smolt alive during the trip.
Pelicans and seagulls! During the delivery the bird net is not in place yet so often they will try to dip for fish. They land in the net and are gently trampolined back into the air.
The Club speedily hooks up the delivery pipe, unhooks the pipe and rehooks each of the three trucks in quick succession. While Pelicans grab a couple fish, the seals are trying to grab a nibble from below.
After the delivery is completed the Club moves the pen slowly to the outer harbor where the smolt will acclimate to temperature and salt (from freshwater)over the next week. They will then be released to the ocean and the pen will be ready for the next delivery.
The Salmon will stay at sea from 2 to 5 years and then look for a river to spawn. Many will come back to the Pillar Point Harbor area. The Klamath river is currently removing the last of 4 dams and there is hope this will help the Salmon to spawn. The Delta Conveyance Project will create new challenges for the California Salmon fishing Industry. This is the second year the Salmon season has been canceled for commercial and recreational fishing.
