San Mateo County Planning Commission Questions the Need for Any Lighting at Tunitas Creek Beach Park Citing the “Dark Skies” Movement

Chair Ramirez introduces the Tunitas Creek Beach Improvement Project agenda item and SMCo Planner, Mike Schaller, answers questions.

To understand the context, you may wish to watch the 10/12/22 presentation first.

Motion was made to approve the Coastal Development Permit, with the additional condition of approval that a lighting plan, including lighting operations, must come back to the Planning Commission for review and approval, before installation.

The Tunitas agenda item was continued to 10/26/22 due to the fact the 900 page document was sent with less than 24 hours to review.

 

 

 

Tunitas Creek Beach Preferred Design

San Mateo County Parks, POST and Coastal Conservancy are excited to share the preferred conceptual design for Tunitas Creek Beach. This design reflects input gathered from many community members during virtual community meetings in October and more than 1,300 survey responses received since May.

  1. More overdevelopment forced by an urban mindset. Natural settings to which access is desired are damaged, not enhanced by artificial intrusions such as lighting. You can’t enjoy nature if you have to damage it in order to access it.
