PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay on February 16th, 2023.

The City of Half Moon Bay has been allocated $2.5 million from the County of San Mateo to open and operate an economic advancement center. This funding will be used to provide a range of technical assistance and support to individuals, households, and small businesses that were negatively impacted by the pandemic, including job and workforce training, and assistance in starting a small business. It is intended to serve the Coastside region (from Pacific to Pescadero) and will be called the Opportunity Center of the Coastside (OCC). The OCC would also house a business incubator that would result in high-wage, high-demand, and high-meaning jobs in opportunity industries.

The recent shootings have highlighted the urgency around employment and housing inequities on the Coastside. Over half of the households on the Coastside earn less than $150,000, which is the amount it would take for a family of four to meet self-sufficiency standards in San Mateo County. Access to good paying jobs, small business support, and entrepreneurship are all paths toward self-sufficiency.

Immediate next steps include securing the location for the OCC, entering into a lease agreement, and working with partners including the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce to develop and release requests for proposals (RFPs) to identify and retain qualified service providers to provide services and support to impacted job seekers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs.
