Monthly Salary:

Recreation Leader I: $2,747-$3,338
Recreation Leader II: $3,104-$3,773
Recreation Leader III: $3,414-$4,150

*Eligible employees may receive bilingual pay premium (additional 2.5% for verbal and 2.5% for written bilingual skills).

Recreation Leader is a flexibly staff class in the classification series. Promotion to the next higher-level classification may occur once the employee has met and demonstrated the required competency level and minimum requirements of the higher-level classification and in accordance with the City policy and procedures related to flexible staffing.

You will join a service-oriented dynamic team in providing quality recreational, social, and cultural services to our residents. Your will help ensure a safe and positive environment for learning and fun.

As the Recreation Leader, you will:

  • Organize, lead, and teach recreational activities.
  • Complete class registration and rental facility applications.
  • Enforce observance of required safety precautions and City guidelines.
  • Admit patrons to recreation facilities, programs, and events.
  • Implement procedures to provide for the safety and welfare of all users engaged in activities in City facilities.
  • Create and distribute flyers and promotional materials to promote recreation activities and programs.
  • Maintain attendance and activity records.
  • Set up and issue equipment, collect and store equipment after use.
  • Provide basic customer service.
  • Facilitate rentals and usage of City facilities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Half Moon Bay is located on the Pacific Coast between forested hills and some of the most beautiful coastlines that California has to offer. Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is also able to meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public. Spanish skills (verbal and written) are highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications
Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of this classification are required. Any combination of experience and training would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Recreation Leader I: Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent, and no experience working in a recreation setting. Experience working in a recreation setting can substitute for the high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Recreation Leader II: Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent; and one (1) year of paid or unpaid work experience or one (1) year of recreation leadership experience equivalent to the level of Recreation Leader I with the City of Half Moon Bay. Experience in sports or other organized recreation programs is preferred.
  • Recreation Leader III: Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent; and two (2) year of paid or unpaid work experience or two (2) years of recreation leadership experience equivalent to the level of Recreation Leader II with the City of Half Moon Bay. Experience in sports or other organized recreation programs is preferred.

Licenses, Certification and Registrations: Possession of a valid California Class “C” driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. Possession of a current CPR/First Aid/AED certificate or ability to attain within 90 days of hire is preferred.

Candidates who receive an offer of employment will be required to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance, and have a physical examination including a TB screening. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.

Benefits

Retirement: PERS Classic employee receives 2% at 55; single highest year and PEPRA employee receives 2% at 62, with highest 3 years average. Classic employees pay 7% employee contribution and PEPRA employees pay half the normal costs (currently 6.5%). The City of Half Moon Bay does not participate in Social Security, except the required Medicare.

Health Insurance: Employee can choose from medical plans provided through CalPERS. Dental Insurance is available through Delta Dental and Vision coverage is available through VSP. The City will pay the MINIMUM employer contribution required under PEMHCA and an allowance of $1,800 per month, which can be used for medical premiums.  Any unused portion may be taken as additional compensation.

Dental and Vision premiums are paid by the employer up to family coverage.

Other Insurance: The City provides a long-term disability coverage equal to 2/3 of monthly salary to a maximum of $6,000.

Life Insurance: City provides $75,000 coverage.

Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.

Vacation: Accrual of 12 days annually for the first four years; increasingly periodically thereafter to 23 days annually after 21 years.

Sick Leave: Accrual at the rate of 12 days per year.

Education Incentive: $1,500 annually for eligible expenses upon approval.

Deferred Compensation: Voluntary participation in ICMA or CalPERS 457 plans are available.
