VIDEO. Half Moon Bay resident and Fashion Environmentalist, Runa Ray, presents her idea at the 9/15/2020 Half Moon Bay City Council meeting.
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a resolution affirming the positive impact of art toward peace and activism that can result in positive change and approve the placement of a temporary art collage geared toward peace.
FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with this action.
STRATEGIC ELEMENTS: This recommendation supports Inclusive Governance.
DISCUSSION: A local resident has approached the City to request permission to temporarily place a collection of art aimed toward peace and activism. The art would be placed for roughly three-four weeks, after which time it will be presented to the United Nations as an initiative to build peace across nations.
The goal of this project is to inspire and mobilize people to use art as activism to educate and advocate for policy change. The canvas collage will be placed either in Mac Dutra Park or at the northeast corner of Main and Kelly, dependent on best location once approved.
The attached resolution expresses the City of Half Moon Bay’s support of public art as a form of peace activism. The resolution also clarifies the City Council’s support of policy changes to end environmental injustice, racial discrimination, war, and climate change.
