Hello Coastsiders, Earthquake and Tsunami Webinars

We met online on Tuesday, May 19, 6:30 PM-7:30 PM PDT when Coastside CERT and the Earthquake Country Alliance will host Part 2 of the Coastside Great ShakeIN – – The Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety, Earthquake Early Warning and the UC Berkeley MyShake App.  We were again be joined by our friends from South Coast CERT, Kings Mountain, and South Skyline CERT.  We also will have new friends from Los Altos PREPARES and Santa Clara County CERTs.

The Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety:

Mark Benthien is Director for Communication, Education, and Outreach for the Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California where he works to increase earthquake and tsunami awareness and to reduce loss.  Mark is also Executive Director of the Earthquake Country Alliance, which organizes the annual Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill.  He was recognized as a White House “Champion of Change” for expanding ShakeOut participation worldwide (2019: 68 million people in 75 countries).

EARTHQUAKE BRACE + BOLT  (EBB)  Listen at 11:00 minutes

Homeowners: EBB provides $3,000 grants to be used toward a code-compliant seismic retrofit for houses that qualify. Find out more about the program and if your house qualifies.

MyShake/ShakeAlert:

Sarina Patel is a Ph.D. student with the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab, where she studies earthquake early warning and earthquake hazards.  She is a part of the MyShake project, a smartphone app which functions as both an earthquake early warning delivery system in the state of California and as a global citizen science experiment.  Her research explores the usage of seismic vibration data collected by the citizen science aspect of MyShake for purposes such as early warning and structural health assessment.  We are waiting to see who we get for the

We are waiting to see who we get for the MyShake/ShakeAlert… but worst case scenario you’ll get me! https://myshake.berkeley.edu/about-us.html

Download My Shake and keep notifications on. Listen to lecture for more on how this App works.

Wednesday, May 13th from 6:30-7:30 PM, Coastside CERT and the Earthquake Country Alliance will host Part 1 of the Coastside Great Shake-IN. Local experts from USGS will cover local geology and threats from earth movement and tsunamis:
Andrew Michael, Ph.D., is a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earthquake Science Center in Menlo Park where he combines observations of earthquake processes and statistical models to determine earthquake probabilities, to evaluate earthquake prediction methods, and to understand how stress and structure function as part of the seismogenic process.
Stephanie Ross, Ph.D., is a USGS research geophysicist with the Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center. Dr. Ross’ research focuses on paleotsunamis (tsunamis caused by earthquakes and landslides) with the goal of tsunami hazard mitigation and risk reduction.

We will send a link and update for Part 2 next week but just wanted to save the date. We understand that 6:30 -7:30 PM does not work for all but we did a sample poll and this was the best for most…. So hope to see you there. Eat early.
