A Taste of the Training in 2018
I had the honor to attend the BWRAG training. To hear the stories of heavy water rescues directly from the surfers involved, illuminates the intensity of the risk of surfing big waves. ~ Michelle Dragony
Greg Long asks the Mavericks Surfers at the beginning of the training:
Could you work seamlessly with any of the approximately 150 surfers that regularly surf Mavericks on a Big Wave Water Rescue?
Without jet ski specific training, probably not.
And that is why BWRAG is doing trainings all over the world with the idea that if more big wave surfers know how to be picked up quickly and safely by a jet ski, lives will be saved.
If you know anyone who surfs Mavericks, or is thinking of it, or someone who is a jet ski operator, or a photographer, they will love this training and the stories the big wave surfers and rescuers tell.
BWRAG Training includes stories like:
- Review Aaron Gold’s Fiji hold-down and subsequent 6-minute CPR rescue. One surfer called it “the most beautiful thing he has ever seen”.
- Greg Long’s 2012 Cordes Bank rescue.
- Jeff Clark’s rescue at Mavericks by Danilo Couto.
- Gerald Butler’s Chasing Mavericks rescue.
Here is a taste of the training Powerlines Productions recorded the training in 2018, when it was set at the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. Big Wave Rescue Assessment Group’s mission is outlined by Oahu Lifeguard Brian Keaulani and Big Wave surfer (and Mavericks contest winner) Greg Long.
BWRAG answers life-saving questions like:
On which side do jet ski operators pick up surfers?
Know the double-wrist rescue grip?
What do you do with your board as you get picked up?
How do you manage the jet ski key and lanyard?
Do you know the difference between Honda and Yamaha jet skis?
What is the definition of fear?
Know the rescue hand signals and voice commands?
